DES applications fail to launch after Java 8 update 351

Symptom:

DES applications that require the use of Java (e.g. Media Reader, Flashback Player) no longer launch after updating to Java 8 u351, showing an “unsigned application requesting unrestricted access to system” error.

Issue:

A security change in Java 8 u351 treats applications signed with the SHA-1 algorithm as unsigned, limiting their ability to execute. The DES server client application is affected by this change, blocking its ability to run on a customer’s system.

Workarounds:

  1. If supported by the customer’s server hardware, update to the latest DES/DEV releases that use the executable DES Client Application instead of the Java launcher.

  2. Modify Java security parameters to allow the execution of SHA-1 signed applications.

  3. Downgrade Java 8 to at most Java 8 Runtime Environment u341. You may need to recreate the DES site exception after this change.

Affected Versions: DES < 4.0.13.2, DEV < 4.0.13.2
